THE AUTHOR
Dr Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz was born in 1948 in Como (Italy) and holds a doctorate in East Asian art history from the University of Cologne. Since 1975 she has been working as a freelance art historian. She was a lecturer in East Asian art history at the universities of Cologne, Bonn and Heidelberg and made numerous study trips to Japan.
Since 2001 Dr Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz has been the editor of the biannual magazine on Far Eastern Art Ostasiatische Zeitschrift, after having held the same position at Mitteilungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Ostasiatische Kunst from 1992 to 2000. She is the author of various articles on Japanese decorative arts and the history of collecting.
Among her publications on netsuke are Netsuke, Japanischer Gürtelschmuck des 18. bis 20. Jahrhunderts aus einer westdeutschen Privatsammlung (exhibition catalogue of the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf 1990), of which an enlarged and revised edition was published in 1994, and Netsuke: Gürtelschmuck aus Japan. Die Sammlung Trumpf, Stuttgart 2000. She presently lives in Cologne, Germany.
