Preface
Professor Friedrich Becker hätte heute bei der feierlichen Zeremonie in der Royal Albert Hall den Titel eines Ehrendoktors verliehen bekommen. Becker war die Schlüsselfigur in der Entwicklung der Moderne der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts auf dem Gebiet der zeitgenössischen Goldschmiedekunst - seiner Tätigkeit als Professor in Düsseldorf folgend. Er war eine Inspiration für die Goldschmiede, Studenten und Künstler aus aller Welt. Er wäre - würde er noch leben - der erste Goldschmied gewesen, dem diese Ehre des College jemals zuteil geworden wäre.
Die Mitglieder des Kollegiums und die Studenten unserer "Applied Arts School" (Schule für Angewandte Kunst) unterstützten einstimmig die Verleihung dieses Ehrendoktors - und alle wollten diese Botschaft bei der "Convocation Versammlung 1997" übermitteln.

Professor Friedrich Becker would have received an honorary doctorate at today's ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall. Becker was the key figure in the development of modernism in contemporary goldsmithing, in the second half of the twentieth century - working from his Professorship at Düsseldorf. An inspiration to jewellers, students and artists all over the world. He would - had he lived - have been the first jeweller ever to have been honoured in this way by the College. The staff and students in our Applied Arts School were unanimous in their support for this honorary doctorate - and they all wanted to convey this message to the 1997 Convocation.
