Der Mauerfall und die deutsche Wiedervereinigung bedeuteten für das Berliner Baugeschehen zwei Dinge: 1. Berlin wurde Hauptstadt. Repräsentative Neu- und Umbauten entstanden. 2. Es wurden große Hoffnungen auf die Entwicklung Berlins zu einer Metropole europäischen, wenn nicht weltweiten Rangs gesetzt. Investoren, Kulturschaffende, noch mehr Touristen und die Medien entdeckten die Stadt für sich.
16 Jahre nach der Wende wird in Berlin immer noch gebaut, das Freilichtmuseum der neuen Architektur ist noch längst nicht vollendet. Viele Star-Architekten haben hier in den Nachwendejahren gebaut. The fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification had two major implications for Berlin's future building development: 1. Berlin became the nation's capital, and consequently, representative (re-)construction work was undertaken. 2. High hopes were placed on the city's development into a European, if not even global metropolis. Investors, the media, the cultural sector and ever more tourists began to discover the city for themselves. 16 years after the Wende, Berlin's open-air museum of new architecture is still not even nearing completion. Construction work continues, and has come to include the work of numerous star architects.
